Tournament Day #1

Here at CeBIT the European Champions in seven respective disciplines are being determined at the fourth Samsung Euro Championship Tournament: Five on the PC, two on the Xbox 360. The first day full of encounters has ended and it held many exciting and surprising results in store for us. Here’s a summary by discipline:

Need for Speed Pro Street
- Team Alternate’s Niklas “sliver” Timmermann was forced to accept defeat at an unexpectedly early point in last year’s WCG Grand Final. Contrary to his performance last year, he’s one of the definite medal favorite in this year’s Need for Speed : Pro Street-Tournament. He won the first round of the upper bracket against the Swiss driver K3idNG easily with 3:0. The following match was quickly named “Match of the Day” when he barely managed to edge out a 3:2 win against the current vice-world champion. The first small step towards victory for the 20 year-old German who’s already secured the first medal for Germany after his win in the semi-final.
Project Gotham Racing 4
- The second professional driver achieved similar results, however his racetracks were on a console. Niklas “Johnson” Krellenberg is a Project Gotham Racing-Driver and so far boasts a completely spotless “track-record”. He’s advanced to the semi-final by defeating Bulgaria’s Ivan and the Swiss racer rolfu, who originally clearly surpassed Johnson in Seattle in 2007. In today’s semi-final he will have to face off against the Frenchman Yggdrasil, who in turn has already eliminated the current Dutch world-champion – Handewasser - from the tournament. A very difficult semi-final awaits the German driver, but should he succeed, the first medal will be secured for Germany.
Dead or Alive 4
- The Dead or Alive 4-Tournament however turned out a lot less successful for Germany. Rudolf “THE TACTICAL” Fischer, known by many as the CGS-Teamcaptain from Berlin Allianz, has already been defeated by the Dutch Krye, after a thrilling 2:3 match. This came as a surprise for many, seeing as Krye didn’t even make it into the tournament phase of last year’s WCG Grand Finals. The German DoA4 representative is now successfully fighting his way through the loser-bracket, scoring an impressive win against the Austrian Silence and he’s now looking forward to facing off against the Russian Staryi. A match he’ll have to win if he still wants one of the higher ranking positions.
FIFA 2008
- A similar situation is that of current FIFA-World-Champion Daniel “hero” Schellhase: After barely winning his first match against Italian @lexbrandon, the German lost his usually harder-than-nails offline nerves, accepting defeat by the hands of Switzerland’s mirodeniro. The match ended 1:2 and was decided by penalty kick. So hero’s path to the higher ranks of the top3 players will lead through the loser-bracket. His next encounter will be with British player “Chris”. Another lose at this point would leave “hero” far below SK Gaming’s commonly high expectations.
Warcraft III
- The Warcraft 3-Tournament turned out as expected, with German player Daniel “XlorD” Spenst defeating Portugal’s “Phoenix” with 2:1, still it was only a close win. Tommorow’s opponent will be Swedish player SaSe from German clan mousesports. A win would catapult him into the quarterfinals, with Dutch starplayer “Grubby” waiting for him. Otherwise he would meet with “Phoenix” once again or the Swiss player HasuHasi and have to make his way through the loser-bracket.
CounterStrike 1.6
- Another group of medal-hopefuls is the CS-Team Alternate. With both wins against Latvia’s Intoxicated and Greece’s Vatos Locos things are looking good for Germany here. So last year’s World Cyber Games Grand Final’s placing has already been matched. Their semi-final adversaries will be fnatic and therefore this will be a major task to overcome. Should Germany be able to defeat Sweden, this would be an important step towards a medal for the recently restructured team with newcomer “Roman R.”.
